Notes on Standard

Specifies requirements for the safety of children’s beds for domestic use with a maximum internal width of 1 000 mm and a maximum height of bed base of 400 mm.

Status changes within next 12 months

There have been some issues using this standard, and these problems were raised with the committee. A number of products are on the market that do not comply to this standard and this is causing problems for retailers. BSI have approved an amendment being produced due to some problems with implementation of the standard. The main changes to be put for public consultation are: Changes in the way formaldehyde content in timber materials is specified, to allow for compliant board materials to be used in production of the product, rather than testing a complete item after manufacture. Splitting out and changing a number of requirements for junior beds (beds for children over 4 years) from cot beds and toddler beds (for children from 18 months to 4 years). The rationale behind these changes are that different hazards and risks are prevalent in the different age groups. The changes for junior beds, relating to gaps in barriers, bed base and protruding parts align the standard with the requirements for bunk beds. Subject to these changes being agreed by the committee the draft amendments are likely to go to public comment at the end of summer/early autumn, with publication of the amendment before year end.
